In 1991, the majestic Rwenzori Mountains were officially designated as a protected area, attaining global recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 and earning the prestigious title of a Ramsar site in 2008.
Standing sentinel over western Uganda, the Rwenzoris, affectionately known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” straddle the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. These equatorial giants boast the lofty Margherita Peak, soaring to a breathtaking 5,109 meters above sea level. Unlike their volcanic counterparts, the Rwenzoris are a geological marvel, formed by a block of rock thrust upwards through the floor of the Western Rift Valley.
Eternalized by the ancient geographer Ptolemy in AD 150 and later brought to the world’s attention by the intrepid explorer Henry Stanley in 1888, the Rwenzoris have captured the imagination of generations. Reaching the pinnacle of Margherita Peak is a feat reserved for the adventurous few, with the record for the oldest summiter held by Ms. Beryl Park, who conquered the peak at the remarkable age of 78 in 2010.
Within the embrace of Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a wonderland unfolds, encompassing the pristine habitats of the 120-kilometer-long and 65-kilometer-wide mountain range. Here, a rich tapestry of life flourishes, with 70 mammal species and 217 avian wonders, including 19 Albertine Rift endemics, alongside some of the rarest vegetation on the planet.
For avid adventurers, the Rwenzoris present an unparalleled hiking and mountaineering playground. A nine- to twelve-day trek promises skilled climbers the ultimate prize – a triumphant summit of Margherita, while shorter, non-technical treks offer the opportunity to conquer the surrounding peaks.
For those seeking a gentler exploration, neighboring Bakonzo villages beckon with nature walks, immersive homestead visits, captivating cultural performances, and the warm embrace of authentic hospitality, complete with home-cooked local cuisine. In the shadow of the fabled Mountains of the Moon, a realm of enchantment awaits, where the spirit of adventure intertwines with the timeless beauty of nature.
